Collectors Edition Thor Is Here!

and I can't afford it D:

As most of you know, with the release of SC2 there was also a quite expensive and rare enough limited edition version, a pretty common thing for Blizz releases. For an extra 40 quid, you get a book of Blizzard artwork for SC2, a Jim Raynor USB with SC:BW installed, behind the scenes blah blah blah but anyway, the Collectors Edition Thor. A pretty decent looking reskin you can use in-game to make other people jelly.

While this is obviously going to be a client-side only edit, it's still pretty awesome to look at the shiney new textures and high rez 250mm Cannon Strikes!

This isn't going to be as simple as the previous MPQ edits I posted. I got the MPQ from the collectors edition and compared it to my own standard MPQ to see the exact differences and it doesn't seem to be a matter of replacing the thor textures. While some of the files I replaced may not be fully neccessary, they were bigger than the ones in the default MPQ and I don't want to take any risks. I advise you to do the same if you intend to use this. I'm going to give a pretty detailed explanation of what to do, so if you follow it carefully there should be no problems. Keep in mind that if you have a friend who owns the collectors edition, you can just get him to send you his MPQ each time a new major patch is released, but this would mean him having to upload roughly 110mb and you downloading 110mb. I don't know about you, but my upload speed is 20kb/s. The file I've prepared is 5mb.

I extracted the only files you're going to need from the collectors edition and compiled them together which you can Download here. The MPQ you need to open is located at SC2 > Versions > Base19132 > patch.SC2Archive. This is based on the current patch (1.3.6). If there's a newer folder under Base19132, use the patch.SC2Archive in that folder instead. This does not include Shaders14513, 14515. Must begin with Base. Make sure you backup this MPQ before you start incase you make a mistake. Just copy it to your desktop or something.

There's been reports that some non English clients can't get this to work. If this is the case for you, copy your base.SC2Assets from Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod to your Mods\LibertyMulti.SC2Mod. Now add the files from this download to the relevent directories within the copy of your mpq then you should be done. If you still can't get it to work, it's likely you're living in the US. A huge number of US client have been unable to get any form of MPQ edit to work. While I've been trying to work out why, it's kind of hard without the US client/account.

Once you open this with your MPQEditor, you'll notice it has the same folders as the download. Make sure you do this exactly as written because if you replace a folder when I haven't said to, you'll have to start again with the backup. From the download, first go to:

Campaigns\Liberty.SC2Campaign\Base.SC2Assets\Assets\StoryModeCharacters\Terran\SM_HyperionArmorer_RequiredAnims

Then copy the file "SM_HyperionArmorer_RequiredAnims.m3a" to the exact same place in the MPQ editor. You should be replacing a file, not a folder. While you were able to go directly to the file in the download, the MPQ still has the other default folders mixed in along the way so make sure you're clicking the right folder name.

After this, we can go back to the begining and this time go to:

Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod\Base.SC2Assets\Assets\Textures

There should be seven .DDS files all begining with "thor_". Copy all of them and paste them into the same directory of the MPQ. It shouldn't prompt you to know if you want to replace a previous file this time because these aren't in the standard MPQ.

Now go back a folder to "Assets" and move to Units\Terran and there should be four folders begining with "Thor". This time it's ok to copy all four folders and paste them directly into the same location within the MPQ, replacing the previous.

Back again, this time to Liberty.SC2Mod. Go to Base.SC2Data\TextureReduction and copy the TextureReductionVariables to the same location in the MPQ, replacing the old.

Now your Thor should be ready. You can double check it by joining the custom map called "Unit Test" where you'll be able to instantly spawn one. Or as many as you like. If your SC2 client starts to download a patch after you've done this when a Blizz patch isn't due, it means you've put on of the files in the wrong place.

  1. hey there. I am also playing on the european server with the german client and followed your instruction for the thor mod precicesly. The sad part is that it doesnt work. The game tries to update and gets an error message at 71% like someone in the thread posted. Does it only work with the english version or is it not working any more?

  2. It's definitely still working. I can't test other language clients unless someone with a German client and collectors edition is willing to send me their mpq file to experiment with, although I don't think the files necessary for this would be any different.

  3. which client are you using? i am the replier in the forum btw. I really followed your tutorial precicesly and every mouse click in your video. A friend of mine also had the problem.

  4. English. I'm messing around with the textures at the moment to find the cause, I'll get back to you later.

  5. english eu client from the battlenet homepage? and thank you so much for all that work.

    Cheers

  6. Think I may have come up with something, but first off, does your game client currently still try to patch or did you backup your files properly so that it can run normally without attempting to apply Thor CE?

    ReplyDelete
  7. I made a backup. The client still tries to patch if I add your stuff. Still works fine without the Thor CE.

  8. After looking around for a bit I noticed that there's too similar file paths within the games directory. Are you opening the folders Mods and Campaigns in the SC folder itself to replace the files in there? Because you shouldn't be going anywhere near them. I can understand that it'd be easy to mix up, but the files have to go in the Mods/Campaigns section within the MPQ file located at SC2 > Versions > Base18092 > patch.SC2Archive.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I did all the changes with the MPQ Editor in that location for me D:SC2/Versions/Base19092/patch.SC2Archive (146mb)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Base19092? I'm guessing you meant 18092 because I don't have a 19092 D: Well until someone with a german client can send me their mpq from the collectors edition, what you could do for now is only transfer the 7 textures from Collectors Edition\Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod\Base.SC2Assets\Assets\Textures in my folder to the similar location within Base19092\patch.SC2Archive.
This will change the looks slightly but it'll still have the previous overlay, so you won't be able to see the entire collectors edition texture.

  11. 18092 is correct. i mistyped that one :D

Unfortunately do I not know anyone with a CE. I am downloading the english eu version at the moment, which will take until tomorrow. That one should work right?

  12. I just tried to only change the textures but it still tries to update :(

    ReplyDelete
  13. As soon as I change any file does the patch start. What the fuck? Even the texture files that don't overwrite any existing files. I am using the Editor from your page. Maybe the programm realises that we are changing something and instantly denies a start or i dont know what. me and my buddy made a video so that you can check our flawless procedure. btw in your tutorial video do you exchange the last file "TextureReductionValues" with the file in:

    "Campaigns/Liberty.SC2Campaign/Base.SC2Data/TextureReduction"

as opposed to your written tutorial which directs to:

    Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod\Base.SC2Assets\Assets\Textures

We made to videos to be safe :D Please help us we need wings - hehe.

I will add the youtube links as soon as the upload is finished.

    Cheers

  14. uh uh. huge idea. could you upload the complete file? my buddy has downloaded the english version. we also made the videos with that version. still uploading ..

  16. Thanks for the videos, seems you're definately doing it correctly, so I'll take a closer look into individual language clients soon.
In the tutorial I said "Back again, this time to Liberty.SC2Mod. Go to Base.SC2Data\TextureReduction and copy the TextureReductionVariables to the same location in the MPQ, replacing the old"
By this I was referring to replacing the TextureReduction also in Base.SC2Data. The previous filepath you're referring to is regarding the previous files to be moved.

I'll try and fix this for you as soon as I can, but I'm currently trying to fix my own SC2 problems as my firewall is being a prick with custom games, and I've a lot of college work to catch up with :P Give me a few days and I'll see what I can do.

  17. thank you. which client are you using?

    ReplyDelete
  18. and could you upload your working file?

    ReplyDelete
  19. EU English client, and the Collectors Edition files were extracted from a US client.

Much as I'd love to, I've got 20kb/s UL speed :/ I'm pretty confident that it'll just start patching again because the video seems to be followed correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ok, try this
    http://www.mediafire.com/?ebspe8jk4e4f6ec

    ReplyDelete
  21. oh damn it. starts patching

    ReplyDelete
  22. why does it start patching if anything gets edited. i don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Okay man, one last idea. Remove all the collectors edition thor stuff, so your client should be working fine. That new download I gave you, go to Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod and put the Base.SC2Assets folder into SC2\Mods\LibertyMulti.SC2Mod

    ReplyDelete
  24. Does this mean that if there is a new patch released, the Thor CE will not be available for that patch unless a friend sends the mpq file to you?

    ReplyDelete
  25. No. Whenever there's a major patch (1.4, 1.5 etc) you'll need to redo this file transfer using the same download only to the new Base folder that appears.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Can't get it to work. Damn. Done it four times yet it still patches. It says the uu44.dll or something like that is missing when I try to open SCII from the base folder. It's weird, it patches everytime I just add something to the MPQ folder.

I'm on SEA client, which I assume is English since any downloads or whatsoever goes through the en-US thingy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Have you tried the second download and extracting it to C:\Program Files (x86)\StarCraft II\Mods\LibertyMulti.SC2Mod method?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't have to open the MPQEditor with that right?

Just extract the Base.SC2Assets folder into the LibertyMulti.SCMod folder that has Base.SC2Data and enUS.SC2Data (in your case should be enGB.SC2Data). If it is, then yeah, I've tried that. ;/

Could it be something wrong with the MPQEditor? Because at times when I move the files it asks me about rulesets and extensions etc.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sorry man, I don't have a US client/account so I can't have a look. I'm trying anything I can to get to the bottom of it but it's pretty hard without a US client to work with.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's alright then. Thanks anyways. Hope you could figure it out eventually. (:

The patch.SC2Archive folder is extremely sensitive somehow. Changing anything would render it to patch when opening SCII. Can't seem to find a way to change anything without having SCII not patch. That's the only problem I guess. :/

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hey, I think I figured out why it doesn't work. Apparently there seems to be a problem with the people with enUS clients.

In the sound relocalisation thread in TL, it also only works for Europe clients but it doesn't work for the NA clients. So I guess that is why this doesn't work as well for people on NA (enUS clients)

  32. Interesting... thanks for the info.

  33. Hey Teliko thanks for the new idea. It works. Unit Test Map successfully destroyed by 100 awesome looking Thors :D

I am the one with whom you had the first ~15 comments.

    Cheers

  34. Ah excellent, glad to hear it's working out for you. So the newest download is working or you found another way? Just need some confirmation so I can better understand it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. hey buddy. sorry for the late answer. my thor looks normal :( new patch must have changed something.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That's because it was a major patch. There's now a new base folder. Base18574.

    ReplyDelete
  37. do you have new files or something?

    ReplyDelete
  38. From what I can make out, folder prioritising has been removed in patch 1.3.3. Only way for now is to directly replace the textures in the mpq. You can thank Blizz for that. I'll see if there's another way around it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. New method = instead of creating the folder structure in LibertyMulti.SC2Mod, copy the entire base.SC2Assets from Liberty.SC2Mod to it and add the textures and .m3s to that instead.

    ReplyDelete
  40. mhm i don't really get it. what am i supposed to do? ^^

    ReplyDelete
  41. I tried the new method and still had the patch come up, and stop at 71%.

    ReplyDelete
  42. If you're running a non enGB client, I'm afraid there's not much I can help you with. Some seem to work, some don't. enGB seems to be the only guaranteed functioning client, it would seem.

  43. Hey Teliko, great work. Its running on my Latin America version, except other people just see them as regular thors. And i see every thor as CE, pretty cool tho, GJ. Vic

    ReplyDelete
  44. Greetings sir, I was just curious if there was some way to rig this up so it'd function like the two Dark Templar models do?

    ReplyDelete
  45. IT worked but the new base file is not base 18575 like in the instructions but instead base 19132.
Playing on the Latin american ver.

    thx\!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. The guide blatantly said that you're being directed to that base folder for the patch at the time of writing, being patch 1.3.3, and if there was a new one, to use that instead. I'll update it anyway, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    ReplyDelete
  47. NOT WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey, so I've tried just simply replacing the files with a friend's who has the CE. Its not working for me either. Do I only need to change the latest base folder or all of them? Also, if I do get this working, I want to be able to choose between both thors in the map editor. Without being able to utilize both I don't gain any benefit.

Thanks for the tutorial though, very enlightening.
